Self assessment is a system HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) uses to collect income tax that is not otherwise collected via the means of pay as you earn (PAYE), which happens in most instances when someone is employed by an individual, small business, or large organisation. Under PAYE tax is usually deducted automatically from wages.
You will need to register for submitting a self assessment income tax return to HMRC if any of the following criteria are met:
- You are self-employed
- You are a landlord
- You are on PAYE but have income from other revenues
- You are a director
- You are in a partnership
- You are on PAYE and earn above £100,000.00 per annum
